How Do Virtual Races Work? The Complete Guide
If you've ever wanted to run a 5K, 10K, or half marathon but couldn't make it to a specific city on a specific date, a virtual race is your answer. A virtual race lets you complete a real, timed running or walking event on your own schedule, in your own neighborhood, on a treadmill, or anywhere you choose — and you still get a real finisher medal shipped to you when you finish.
This guide covers everything you need to know: how virtual races work, how to register, how to track your time, how the medals get to you, and how your registration supports real charities around the world.
What Is a Virtual Race?
A virtual race is a running or walking event with no fixed location. Instead of meeting at a starting line on race day, you complete the distance (5K, 10K, half marathon, or a themed challenge) on your own — over a day, a week, or even a month — wherever and whenever works for you.
You still get all the things that make running a real race feel like an event: a bib, a finisher medal, results you can submit, and the satisfaction of completing a goal. You just don't have to travel or show up at a specific time.
How Do Virtual Races Work? The 4-Step Process
Step 1: Register online
Pick your race, choose your distance, and pay the registration fee. Most virtual races cost between $20 and $50, and the fee usually includes your finisher medal and shipping. Some races also include a race bib, a t-shirt, or a digital certificate.
Step 2: Receive your medal in the mail
Within a few days of registering, your finisher medal ships out to you. This is one of the best parts of virtual racing — the medal arrives before you've even run the race, which is great motivation.
Step 3: Run or walk your race
Pick a date that works for you, then complete your distance. You can run outside on a route you choose, on a treadmill, on a track, on a trail, or even walk the course with friends. There's no pressure and no one watching.
Step 4: Track your time and submit your results (optional)
Use a GPS watch, a running app (Strava, Nike Run Club, Garmin Connect, Apple Fitness), or just a stopwatch to record your time. Most virtual races have an online form where you can submit your results — and a public leaderboard where you can see how you stack up against other runners around the world.
Why Run a Virtual Race?
Flexibility that real races can't match
Real races have a date, a start time, and a course. If you can't be there, you're out. Virtual races let you pick the day, the time, the place, and the pace. If you want to run a 5K at 6am on a Sunday, you can. If you want to run it at 10pm on a Wednesday, you can.
A real medal and a real sense of accomplishment
The medal you get is the same kind of medal you'd get at an in-person race — often better, because virtual race medals are designed to be collectible, themed, and high-quality.
Support a charity with every step
Most virtual races (including all of ours) donate a portion of every registration to a featured charity. When you sign up, you're not just doing something good for yourself — you're doing something good for a cause. We've donated over $1,000,000 to charities through our virtual races.
Perfect for beginners
If you've never run a 5K before, a virtual race is the easiest way to try one. No crowds, no pressure, no specific start time. You can walk, jog, or run the whole thing if you want.
Great for people who live far from races
If you live in a small town, a rural area, or a city without many local races, virtual races let you participate in the running community no matter where you are.
How Are Finisher Medals Shipped?
When you register for a virtual race, your finisher medal is mailed to you — usually within a few days. We ship worldwide, so you can register from anywhere.
Medals are typically shipped via USPS, Royal Mail, or another national postal service, depending on your country. Shipping times vary: most US registrations arrive within 5-10 business days, international registrations within 10-21 business days.
Some races offer expedited shipping for an additional fee. If you have a deadline you're working toward (like a charity event, a school fundraiser, or a themed month), check the shipping options at checkout.
What Charity Gets the Donation?
Every virtual race on Virtual Run Events is tied to a specific charity or cause. When you register for a race, a portion of your registration fee is donated to that charity.
Our featured charities have included organizations that fight cancer, support mental health, provide food and clean water, help animals, and support veterans. We've donated more than $1,000,000 to these causes.
If you want to support a specific cause, browse our charity virtual races to see all the races tied to a particular charity. You can also check each race's product page to see exactly which charity your registration will support.
Common Questions About Virtual Races
Do I have to submit my results to get my medal? No. You get your medal whether or not you submit your results. The medal is yours once you register.
Can I run a virtual race on a treadmill? Yes. You can run, jog, or walk on a treadmill, on a track, on a road, on a trail, or anywhere else. The race is "virtual" because the location is up to you.
Can I run with friends or family? Absolutely. You can run the race solo, with a group, or with a pet. Some people organize small in-person virtual races with friends — everyone registers online, runs the same route, and compares times afterward.
What if I miss the official "race window"? Most virtual races have a generous completion window — usually 30 to 90 days from registration. Check the specific race page for the exact deadline.
Can I do more than one virtual race? Yes, and many runners do. You can register for as many races as you want, in any combination of distances and themes. Some runners collect medals from dozens of races; others pick the ones tied to their favorite causes.
How to Choose the Right Virtual Race
When you're picking a virtual race, here are a few things to consider:
- Distance: Pick a 5K if you're a beginner or want a quick win, a 10K if you want more of a challenge, or a half marathon if you're training seriously.
- Theme: Many virtual races are themed around holidays, awareness months, or causes. Pick one that excites you.
- Charity: If you want your registration to support a specific cause, browse by charity.
- Medal design: If you're a medal collector, look for races with medals you love.
- Timing: Some races are tied to specific dates (Breast Cancer Awareness Month, World Cancer Day, Mental Health Awareness Month, etc.) — others are open year-round.

from 541 reviewsAmazing have to post my results but really cool to do
Very unique medal. Quality item with a lot of meaning to me.
This was my first virtual run ever and I had a great experience. I was happy that I could pick the distance. Having that option made it easy for me to achieve a distance that was easy and a challenge at the same time. The medal I received was properly packaged and looked AMAZING. The details of the medal were very nice. Some members of my run community were even jealous lol, but I let them know I got it so they can too. Again all around great experience, can't wait to sign up for another one.
Awesome race through Florida! Medal is actually so pretty and detailed!
